CHAPTER 14

HENDERSON FIELD – OCTOBER 16, 1942

“Hey, there she is!” Whitey Groft pointed, stuffing his cigarette in his mouth so he could tug at his friend’s sleeve. “Let’s hope she can get all that go-juice unloaded before Tojo shows up, huh?”

Robert Leckie had seen the converted destroyer easing up toward the wharf at Lunga Point of course. How could he not? And after all… that’s why they were out there in their limited free time. He also saw the big barge the ship was towing, heavily weighed down by what must be tens of thousands of gallons of avgas. Or maybe regular gas?

There were barrels stacked in multiple tiers along with towable tankers that held 500 gallons each. Henderson needed it all, aviation fuel and regular gasoline and diesel. What bothered Leckie and made his scrotum tighten at the sight… was who the unlucky bastards drafted into stevedore duty would be. He knew from hard experience that a couple of young loiterers could quickly find themselves being volun-told for said duty.

“Yeah, that’s swell, Marlin,” Leckie said. “But maybe we oughta find a more… remote… place to watch.”

Groft looked confused and then grinned, “Aw, hell… how about we give them fellers a hand then.”

Groft was pointing at a caravan of ambulances and Jeeps loaded down with wounded Marines. Most of them ambulatory, but with a few stretcher cases going back as far as the two nights that Colonel Edson and the Raiders and First Chutes defended Lunga Ridge. Now called Bloody Ridge or, most commonly, just Edson’s Ridge.

“Yeah… probably could use it,” said Leckie. “Looks like McFarland is mooring in the road.”

“Road? What road?”

Leckie rolled his eyes, “The anchor road, ya dope. Probably doesn’t want to get all that gas near the dock. See there? Them smaller barges and motorboats are probably gonna get the wounded guys out to her and the fuel in.”

“Ball buster…” noted Groft.
